WonderCon 2019 CAC #2 Heroes On the Margin

Hello fellow comic fans! We recently presented at WonderCon over the weekend. Below is the video footage from the conference.

Here is a brief description of our papers:

Brenda Bran (CSU Dominguez Hills) uses intersectional theory to examine the [re]oppression of indigenous figures like Scrapps in Tom King's The Omega Men.

Terri Fleming-Dright (CSU Dominguez Hills) argues that Joƫlle Jones' Lady Killer, a third-wave feminist text, creates agency through contradiction to allow women to better understand and develop their own distinct identities, diversity, and feminism.

Salvatore (Tory) Russo (CSU Dominguez Hills) examines the "chosen child concept" in Kyle Higgins' Power Rangers, asking how such children sacrifice their innocence to save the world-and what happens when they are no longer heroes and have to integrate back into mundane society.

Jennifer Henriquez (CSU Dominguez Hills) examines the extraordinary social and racial burdens placed on minority "chosen children" in Monstress and Ms. Marvel.

Up first we have the ever fabulous Brenda Bran: The Forgotten Ideologue: Tom King’s Scrapps as an Intersectional Martyr

Second is the wonderful Terri Fleming Dright: Femenisms in Practice

Third is yours truly (Tory): Kyle Higgins' Power Rangers and the Burdens of Being Chosen Children

And the smartest person I've ever met, Jennifer Henriquez: Marvellous and Monstress:

Examining Intersectional Oppressions On Minority Chosen Ones in Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda’s Monstress, vol 1: Awakening and G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona’s Ms. Marvel, vol. 1: No Normal
